Saint Agatha, the return of the skull to the reliquary bust


One of the rarest and most solemn moments of the celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the return of Saint Agatha's relics to Catania.


The photograph records the placing of Saint Agatha's skull inside the reliquary bust: an exceptional rite, last performed in 1963, whose repetition cannot be foreseen.


The image therefore also has documentary value: it bears witness to a historic moment unlikely to happen again soon and normally hidden from the eyes of the faithful.

One of the most awaited moments of the Agathine celebrations: the reliquary bust of Saint Agatha is brought out of the Cathedral's Sacellum and returns to the sight of the faithful.


The image records the meeting of the reliquary bust, the clergy and the people inside the Cathedral, in the passage from the private custody of the Sacellum to the public dimension of devotion.
